Pallet Standards and Specifications
A short guide to terms you may see when ordering pallets. Rules change, so check current regulations for your shipment.
Key Standards
GMA-style pallet
The 48" × 40" pallet associated with the Grocery Manufacturers Association is the most common size in North American grocery and retail distribution.
ISPM 15
The international standard for wood packaging. Heat treatment raises the wood core to at least 56 °C for at least 30 minutes, and the packaging is marked to show the treatment. Many countries require it for imports.
ISO Pallet Sizes
ISO 6780 lists six pallet sizes used in world trade.

Load Types
A pallet usually has different load limits depending on how it is used. Ask the supplier for ratings that match your use.
Static load
The load on a pallet resting on a flat floor. This is usually the highest of the three.
Dynamic load
The load while the pallet is being moved by a forklift or pallet jack.
Racking load
The load while the pallet sits on racks, supported only at its edges. This is usually the lowest.
